À Conversa com... Andrea Hirata

  1. Permite ao leitor levar a cabo uma viagem maravilhosa até à ilha de Belitong;
  2. Dá ao leitor a incrível oportunidade de explorar uma cultura única e especial;
  3. Através da sua leitura, o leitor consegue descobrir o verdadeiro Espírito Humano, um espírito de sacrifício, de dedicação e orgulho por sermos aquilo que somos;

What makes a good author? Above all, I believe that a good author reaches its readers, makes them think, somehow managing to change its view of a certain subject, or just pure and simply, touching them.
This doubt rouse up one of these rainy afternoons in the Bar Procópio near Mãe D'Água in Lisbon,  when, invited by Editorial Presença, I had the pleasure to sit down with the author of this marvelous book that I’m currently reading – The Rainbow Warriors – and that’s leaving a brand in the world, touching and disturbing, in a good manner, all the ones that read it.

Andrea Hirata is one of the most special people that I’ve ever met. Extremely humble and accessible, his language affect us all, not only for his simplicity and purity, but also for the message that he shares. There’s no doubt that he fulfills all the requirements to be a good author, a special author, someone that takes a simple story and manages to deeply touch us and making us to want to share his book.

One interesting thing about The Rainbow Warriors is that it was written in only three weeks and it was actually meant to be a simple gift to his teacher (Bu Mus – one of this book’s character). However, someone made it reach an editor and all of a sudden, Andrea Hirata was no longer unknown becoming Asia's best selling author.

According to Andrea this book has four important tasks:
  1. It allows the reader to take a wonderful journey to Belitong island;
  2. Gives the reader the incredible opportunity to explore a very unique culture;
  3. It also allows the readers to discover the real Human Spirit – the spirit of sacrifice, dedication and pride for being what we are;
  4. Finally this book is pure Inspiration – everyone that reads it cannot remain still. This story, those 11 students and their teacher are a real inspiration for everyone.
I personally would like to add something else, now that I’m almost at its last pages…with its simplicity this book is also a true hymn to Education, a real and fantastic story that should be read for every student and teacher!

I would love to go on and on about this meeting for it was really amazing. But I have to finish and last share with you a saying from his village that Andrea shared with us, and that really transmits his message: you can only survive a difficulty if you know the secret. And do you know the secret? Just SMILE.

I take the opportunity to thank Andrea for being such a special person and to spend a little of his time with us. I also thank Editorial Presença for bringing this book to Portugal and arrange this meeting with its author.
